2023-24 Season

MEN v WOMEN
Wed 19th June 24

Well this was an historic night in more ways than one! With the Euro`s on and Scotland playing Switzerland, needing at least a draw to give themselves a change to reach the knockout stage, it was an electric night!

The Scotland match was the main attraction and reduced the numbers at the Men v Women which ran in the back ground, but for those that did make the effort, thank you and what a battle in the end on and off the pitch/boards!

After the women's historic victory last season, could they do the impossible and make it back to back wins for the first time ever?

Last year they won by 15 chalks, this time around it was a much closer affair, with only two chalks in it, but none the less, history was made, and it was congratulations to the women winning 95-93 on the night!

Well played to the women and their captain, Alice Noble, for making history!

How things have changed, and instead of, "will the women get a win for a change", it`s "Will the men ever get their hands on the trophy again"!

A Scotland fighting draw and a women`s victory, made it a night to remember at the Taxi Club!

Thank you to the Taxi Club for hosting the event, and the Bar staff for their hard work on the night.

Most of all, thank you to the players and teams (Club Metro; Ellenbank: Hobo`s; Rat Pack; Rosebank 80; Tams Bar; Taxi Club & Victoria), that made the effort to turn-up and play during a Scotland match!

Once again, congratulations to the women and their captain, Alice Noble, bragging rights the women!

Can the women make it 3 in a row next year? We will just need to wait and see!

HISTORY

MEN v WOMEN
Wed 14th June 23

What an epic night of dominoes in the Taxi Club with the Men versus Women cup competition.

Before the night started, there was a bit of worry that this event would not be supported as well, as it was no longer a league event. Glad to report that was not the case, indeed, we had one of the best turnouts ever!

In all we had 32 men and 24 women, which meant the top 8 women would play a second games. All matches were the best of 13 chalks, 1st to 7 wins!

The women got off to a flying start winning 4 of the first 5 matches, and by big margins to take an early lead 32 – 18 (14 chalk lead)!

Unbelievably the women then won 4 of the next 5 singles again to increase their lead to 21 chalks (65 – 44)!

In the third set of 5 matches the men hit back, winning 4 of them to close the gap to just 10 chalks (87 – 77)!

The 4th set of 5 matches saw the men win 3 of the 5 matches to close the gap to just 4 chalks (112 – 108)!

Incredibly, the men won 4 of the next 5 matches to take the lead for the first time by 4 chalks (139 – 135). What a fight back by the men!

But the women did not buckle and in the next 5 games all the winning female players came back on and just carried on where they left off by absolutely trouncing the male players winning all 5 matches, two of them by 7 – 1 to completely turn things around and stick a dagger in the men’s hearts to lead by 16 chalks (170 – 154) with only two matches left!

This time the impossible was impossible even if the men could have won the last two matches 7 – 0! Of course that did not happen anyway and the final score was;

Men 167, Women 182

Victory and the bragging rights go to the women’s team who win by an amazing 15 chalks. What a last 7 matches by the ladies after the men had caught them up, outstanding performance and the first time in 8 years since they last beat the men!

The double winners for the ladies were; Captain, Alice Noble, Ann Shepherd, Sharon Rourke, Audrey Smith, Pat Mitchell & Loraine Abbot

Congratulations and well deserved ladies!

Thank you to the Taxi Club and James Hendry for hosting the Men v Women competition and a fantastic night was had by all, especially for the ladies who partied all night long!

MEN v WOMEN 2021-22

Oh what a night as the last league event took place. The Men v Women brought the curtain down on the 2021-22 season with only the Dance and Trophy Presentations to take place (Sat 13th Aug 22).

This match took place on Wednesday 25th May 2022, 7:45pm in the Taxi Club. The men had 30 players, while the women had 21 players with 9 of their players playing twice.

In all 30 individual matches took place with the men winning 17 of them and the women winning 13. On the women's side Ann Shepherd (Victoria), Ann Rigden (Blackwatch) & Jackie Gallacher (Ladywell) won both their matches against the men so big thumbs up!

There were a few close 9-8 matches; The biggest margin was 9-2 when John McLaughlan (Taxi Club) beat Denise Hendry (Club Metro). (Sorry Denise). But Denise did win her second match!

Club Metro had 9 players, with Hobo`s 8 players. Four teams had no players, with one team only having one. They will be fined. (see spreadsheet for more info).

It was a good fun nights dominoes but there has to be a winner and once again it`s congratulations to the men who won 233 - 206! Commiserations to the women this time. There is always next year!
