LEAGUE & TEAM MEMORIALS
The Mary Larg Memorial Cup 2025
The Mary Larg Memorial Cup took place at the Taxi Club on Friday 1st August 2025.
A great night’s dominoes was enjoyed, with an entry fee of £5, all money paid out.
The format was the usual straight knockout, with 40 players taking part (I think?).
During the competition, two football cards were sold, and an auction was held for a nail voucher kindly donated by Sarah Richardson (Rosebank 80), all in aid of Alice Noble’s grandson, Kelvin Gordon, who has been going through tough health challenges. In total, a fantastic £130 was raised, with Pat Mitchell (Club Metro) outbidding everyone else for the nail voucher!
Unusually, we also played bingo during the night! While calling the bingo, James Hendry gave a speech reminding us who Mary Larg was.
Denise Hendry (Club Metro), on her way to the final, beat her husband, James Hendry (Club Metro), in the semi-finals to one of the biggest cheers of the night!
In the final, Denise played against Benny Sharp (Athletic A), and managed to take the honours on the night to become The Mary Larg Champions 2025!
Well played Denise, commiserations Benny.
We also had karaoke at the end of the night, with Sarah Richardson.
Once again, thank you to everybody who took part and supported the charity side. Also, thank you to the Taxi Club, our host, and bingo caller James Hendry, ably helped by his other half, Denise, for a great night!
Lets do it all again next year!
The 3rd Moira Sharp Memorial
The 3rd Moira Sharp Memorial Trophy was held after our league AGM on Sunday 20th July 2025, in the Taxi Club. Once again, it was well supported by our players, with lots going on. Benny Sharp, Norma Rodger, Gemma & Britney and the rest of the family were over the moon with the turnout and the financial support. It’s hard to believe it’s the 3rd year of the Moira Sharp Memorial.
Moria was a long-time member of the domino league and a foster carer for children over many years. She was also a well-known singer in Dundee and further afield. In later life, her favourite two songs to sing were the Rose & the Wind Beneath my Wings. Moira is missed by all, but especially by her family.
On the night, they managed to raise £730 (+ £20 still due in), which was amazing! Well done everybody for your support, both physically and financially.
Several events took place during the evening, including an auction featuring a Dundee United bespoke domino board made by master craftsman Benny Sharp. This was won by Eric Stewart (Athletic A). As always, Benny, thank you for this – your domino boards are amazing!
This year, Moira's family have donated the money to a local cause and someone they have known since birth. Kelvin Gordon, Alice Noble’s grandson, is a young man born with only one working kidney. Two years ago, his only working kidney started to fail and he had to go on dialysis. This involved travelling from Whitfield to Ninewells Hospital weekly, which was not only a worry but also a costly financial burden on his mum, who is on PIP and found it a struggle to cope. Of course, Alice stepped in to help them out financially. Kelvin then had to give up his job and is no longer able to work while waiting for a kidney transplant.
Unfortunately, Kelvin got more bad news. While undergoing tests to see if he could get on the transplant lists, the hospital team found a problem with his heart, requiring major open-heart surgery. You can imagine the shock this was to Kelvin’s family. Not only is this emotionally draining for Kelvin and all his family, but the surgery will have to take place in Edinburgh, involving a lot of travelling and probably staying in Edinburgh, which is expensive, for however long.
On hearing this news, Benny and his family offered to support Kelvin, which was very generous of them and much appreciated by Kelvin and family.
Once again, a big thank you to everybody involved on the night and beforehand. Special thanks to Norma, Benny and the rest of Moira's family for all their hard work leading up to and on the night.
It was worth all the effort, and I am sure Moira would have been over the moon with the money raised and who it went to!
See you all next year!
The 9th JEANNIE WALKER MEMORIAL 2025
Wednesday 18th June 2025 – 7:45pm
Ellenbank Bar
The 9th JEANNIE WALKER MEMORIAL
Congratulations to Grant Cunningham (Proprietor) on winning the Jeannie Walker Memorial trophy after beating Jim Milne (Ellenbank) in the final! Well done, Grant!
Hard luck Jim, but runner-up in a field of 28 is a great performance. Also well done to the two losing semi-finalists, Kenny Wanless (Ellenbank) and Rab McGarry (Rat Pack).
What a great night of dominoes at the Ellenbank Bar, with 28 players taking part in the 9th Jeannie Walker Memorial! It would have been the 11th, but two years lost due to COVID!
The turnout was better than expected as the Taxi Club Summer league, and the Snug Bar Summer League started on the same night!
The format was first to 11 chalks for all matches, including the final. The draw was made, keeping players from the same teams apart in the first match you play. After that, it was just a straight draw to the finish line! There were some great battles, team mate bragging rights and wow is me stories, but no whitewashes!
The Jeannie Walker family thank you all for your support on the night. We would also like to thank Grant Cunningham (Ellenbank Bar) for hosting and supporting this event. I would also like to thank, Arlene & Chris for their support on the night.
Of course without the support of you the players on the night, it would not have been a success, so a big thank you for your support!
Once again congratulations to Grant Cunningham (Proprietor) on his successful night’s dominoes!
Lets do it all again next season!

Congratulations

well done to the two losing semi-finalists, Sally Hodge (Athletic) and Derek
Williamson (Ellenbank).
What a great
night of dominoes at the Ellenbank Bar, with 34 players taking part in the 8th
Jeannie Walker Memorial! It would have been the 10th, but two years
lost due to COVID!
Alice Noble & Ray Duncan were there to represent Jeannie`s family, plus 32
players representing nine of the Hilltown League teams. This was better than
expected as the Taxi Club Summer league started tonight as well!
The format was first to 9 chalks for all matches, including the final. The draw was made with the two prelims and the first round, keeping players from the same teams apart. After that, it was just a straight draw to the finish line!
There were
some great battles, team mate bragging rights and wow is me stories, but no
whitewashes!
The Jeannie Walker family thank you all for your support on the night. We would
also like to thank the Ellanbank Bar (Chris McKinlay) & Mo (Bar staff) for there support on
the night, especially the mince rolls, and James Hendry for his kind donation
to the competition!
Once again congratulations Ann Rigden (Athletic B) on her successful nights
dominoes!
HILLTOWN DOMINO NEWS
UPDATE – 29/06/23
The money raised at the 1st Moria Sharp Memorial Trophy held on Sunday 16th April 23, in the Taxi Club was presented this week by Norma Rodger & Benny Sharp (Athletic) to a local Dundee charity, “TOGS for tots” The cheque was for a fantastic £850!
"Togs is a non-profit organisation serving Dundee and the surrounding areas. They aim to be the ‘go-to’ service for families struggling to provide essential clothing and equipment for their children (any baby or child classed as a dependant).
They run similarly to a food-bank – they receive donations from the public and distribute them to children suffering from the effects of poverty. Their service is for anyone struggling to afford what they believe is an ‘essential’ after food and fuel for the healthy development of children pre-birth to 18, Including items for expectant mothers."
(Checkout their website for more info, link below).
Once again a big thank you to everybody involved on the night and before hand. Special thanks to Norma, Benny and the rest of Moria`s family for all their hard work leading up to and on the night.
It was worth all the effort!
